This post is one I’ve been itching to share with you all for what feels like eons! The fabulously talented, and generally all round top chick, Peta Peace from She Quilts A Lot has launched her first book and I’m thrilled to be sharing in her celebrations. Also, because cake.
Peta’s quilts are fresh and contemporary, and her Instagram feed is a veritable feast of inspiration so I knew her book would be a delightful package of beauty. When her publisher sent me the book, I found myself going through all the pages wondering how I’d ever make a decision about which project to make. I could have immediately sat down and stitched up almost all the projects without a single thought and the more pages I turned, the more quilts were added to my list – it was a frustration to pick just one quilt to make but you know, deadlines and real life and all that jazz mean I can’t always make all the quilts!
The Square Peg, Round Hole appealed to me for the obvious statement it makes as well as for the use of my favourite neutral background (hot pink), then there was Playing Around Again for the quick fix of a big block quilt and Delight which cleverly uses a secondary pattern repeat… but I did have to pick just one and the winner was Modern Spools.
As soon as I saw this quilt, I could see all the solids jumping off my shelves and in to place, switching out the prints of the original spools and replacing the white background for one of my most favoured dark backgrounds.
This quilt was a joy to make, I’ve pieced the spool heads with a Metallic Silver, a rainbow selection of luscious FreeSpirit Designer Solids for the spools and an interweave chambray for the background. I just love the way a dark background makes the solid colours really pop out of the top. I have to mention that any of the quilts in this book are suitable for you to change out the fabric choices, you can use your favourite fabrics to make each quilt entirely your own and while they are designed for
Peta’s original design is six columns and four rows so in my typical style, I made it bigger. I like big quilts and I really liked the colours so I just couldn’t stop at 23 spools. I made 40 spools and choosing which five to leave out was agonising – they’ll go into the back for sure! The patterns in the book are really well written so it was a simple calculation on my part to make a few more pieces – even making the second tilted block was easy thanks to Peta’s clear instructions for the original, just a twist here or there, et voila! I’m so happy with this flimsy! After making it though, I realised just how may thread changes will be required for the quilting…
I’m so thrilled with this quilt so I’d love you to make your own! The Creative Retreat is giving away a kit for you to make your own rainbow Modern Spools along with a copy of A Piece Of Cake*.
